I think house concerts first started with the artists get
togethers. The first in our area was suggested by an artist when he was
staying at the host's house. The comment was "This would be a great room
for a house concert." House concerts are very popular in the Washington,
DC area. People like the pure acoustic sound, low price and party
atmosphere. Parking is usually not a problem in suburbia if the host
sets up a few rules. As long as the entry fee is a donation, in the US
the government doesn't hassle the home owners. Concerning income, no one
sponsoring a house concert is likely to even break even, so no taxes.
A few commercial venues have failed while house concerts have soared.
The big names (200 seat audience + up) avoid house concerts, but even
they will consider one that 1) is on a day off, 2) will not draw down
attendance at a bigger venue and 3) has supported him/her before they
were big. Although not a house concert, Vic Heyman gets some amazing
people to come to the 60 seat O'Briens Barbeque. You may send a survey
to my House Concert list at HouseConcert@egroups.com. If it won't let
you send to the list, you can either join or send it to me for forwarding.
